Spiritual Healing Now

When I think about spiritual healing, my mind goes to thoughts of Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder of the Unity movement, who had been given a diagnosis of tuberculosis and six months to live. The story goes that, in 1886, she and her husband Charles attended a lecture in Kansas City given by Eugene B. Weeks, and Myrtle left with insights that changed her life. Ringing in her head were the words, “You are a child of God, and you do not inherit sickness.”

She had believed she inherited tuberculosis but now, at age forty-two, worked on casting aside that old belief and blessing all the cells of her body with new life, declaring that they were indeed filled through and through with God-life. And with her new-found spiritual understanding and the application of spiritual principles, she healed herself of tuberculosis.

In this article, I’d like to draw upon the work of Neal Valhe in his biography of Myrtle Fillmore, Torch-Bearer to Light the Way, so you may capture some of the essence of the activity of Spirit in the healing process.

Myrtle Fillmore came to understand that mind and body are not separate. There is intelligence contained in every cell of our body, and it responds to our thoughts. It responds to how we react to circumstances or situations in our lives, and it stores that information for playback in all the experiences of our lives.

But Myrtle said that understanding is not enough. It’s good for us to understand Truth principles if we are to make progress in unfolding our spiritual awareness, but it’s not enough. In her own life, she made a commitment to practicing the Truth principles. She began to speak to the intelligence within her body; she affirmed the presence of God within herself. She focused on that healing activity, and gradually began to see it manifest in her life.

Then Myrtle began to use the techniques in working with others and helping them to heal themselves. Notice I said “to heal themselves.” Although people looked to her as a healer, she recognized it was not she, herself, that was the healer but the spirit of God within the person was the healing power. She encouraged them always to look to the spirit within, to come to understand the spiritual principles and begin to apply them in their own life. Get to know the truth of God within, then the healing transformation can take place.

As she began to work with people, friends and neighbors sought her out for help and they began to see marvelous healings taking place (many of these are recorded in the book, Torch-Bearer to Light the Way, by Neal Vahle). And always, Myrtle focused on God’s healing power. She said that the key to healing is having faith in the healing power of God within you. The book goes on to say she soon came to realize that physical healing was only one aspect of the work. The real goal was advancing the spiritual development of the person.

Both she and Charles Fillmore came to understand that the role of the healer and the teacher were interrelated, and they began to emphasize spiritual instruction to enable people to understand the healing power of God within. They didn’t tell them what to think but how to think, so that their lives could be different, empowered and nurtured by the spirit of God within them.

Myrtle said that the whole aim of their method was to quicken the spirit within the person until they grasped the Truth for themselves. Healing prayer was also connected with the instructions, and excellent results nearly always followed.

They also began to realize that they were actually getting better results with what they called “absent healing,” where people would write in for healing. The work began to grow and they eventually had other people to help them do the healing work. They developed a system of working with people who wrote or called in for healing; they would pray with them over the phone and hold them in a consciousness of God’s presence within, with miraculous results. People wrote in with testimonials about the things that had happened for them through the absent healing.

That was the beginning of the work that became Silent Unity and became the Silent Unity healing department, which grew and has continued for over a hundred years now. You can call Silent Unity any time of day or night and a Silent Unity worker will pray with you (1-800-669-7729). There is an activity of Spirit that goes on when you release something in that way and you know that someone is praying with you. And healing can take place.

In the teachings and in absent healing, Myrtle Fillmore always focused on the importance of finding the healing power of God within. She stressed what she called a “threefold healing.” In the spiritual, it is an activity of aligning with the true spirit of God which is at work within you at all times.

The mental work is to recognize that when you have negative thoughts about yourself or about situations, you can change those thoughts; you can choose your thoughts. She encouraged people to think in a positive way knowing that God’s presence is active within. It’s a matter of aligning your thoughts with the presence of God within.

In regard to the physical, recognize that God’s activity is in every cell of your being and that you can speak to the cells of your body and know that your body will respond. She speaks not only of our physical body but also the body of our experience; God is at work in the physical body and the body of our experience. Wherever we are, God is; we can take comfort from knowing that. And healing can be made manifest.

Your healing is at hand, my friend. If you are going through anything that needs healing, whether it’s body, mind, emotions, relationships, whatever it is, just keep your thoughts and attention on that idea: “My healing is at hand.” As Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is at hand.” And that means the kingdom of God is right here, it’s handy, it’s at hand right now, because God is omnipresent. Say that to yourself: “My healing is at hand.” Know that for yourself, put your attention on that, keep your thoughts on that; no matter what the appearance, be persistent and steady in your efforts. Not trying hard, but letting yourself turn to the spirit of God within, for it’s the spirit within which always does the work.

Remember, God is Blessing You, Right Now!

Light on the Path

When the apostle Paul was in Athens, he saw that the city was full of idols and he was led to speak to the people of Athens in what has become known as the sermon on Mars Hill:

“. . . as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything. . . . Yet he is not far from each one of us, for in him we live and move and have our being. . . .  For we are indeed his offspring.” (Acts 17:23-25, 27-28). Think about this in relation to your own self.

Then contemplate the words of Jesus, “God is Spirit.” As Eric Butterworth wrote in his book, Unity: A Quest for Truth, “He is the principle of life and intelligence, everywhere present at all times, and just as accessible as the principle of mathematics. . . . The life in you is God-life, the wisdom in you is God-intelligence, and the love in you is God-love. . . . You are created as a perfect idea in God-Mind, and your true purpose in life is to outpicture this idea in expression. And there is no better way to worship God than to rightly express Him.”

Try to realize that God is greater than anything your human mind can conceive. Remember that if your conception of God is the highest and best that you can form, it is going to be a workable conception for you, and it is right for you at that time. Simply keep your mind open. Maintain your tolerance for the viewpoints of others. Don’t argue about it; what they believe is right for them. What you believe is right for you. It is well to realize that satisfying as your conception of God might be, it does not necessarily mean that it encompasses the whole of God.

Let us take care then that we don’t criticize another because his or her idea of God differs from ours. To him, his God is just as real and just as helpful as our God is to us.

It has been said that no one has ever seen God; yet, certainly countless millions have felt God and known His living presence. Whatever you feel or think abut God, there is one thing I believe is felt and treasured deep in the heart of everyone – that is, God is Spirit and dwells deep within us. This is the most glorious fact in the whole realm of human understanding; we frail, human creatures possess the divine nature of omnipotent God. Suppressed, hidden, ignored, denied perhaps, it is still there, a little spark which a man or woman might desecrate, but never quite lose. Released, acknowledged, it surges through us like a great tide of joy, flooding our whole being with light.

God is here now in us, the God who was in the beginning and will be world without end. We need only accept God, express Him in thought and act, if we wish to share in the divine power and the divine flow in and through and as us.

If only we could realize that we are spiritual beings, children of God, what a great change this realization would make in our lives. We can catch the ideal in short glimpses; we do realize at times something of what it means to be a spiritual being, but we don’t seem able, or perhaps willing, to sustain the ideal. I believe it is important to know that we are children of God and to know it when we face the world with its complications. This is the real key to lasting happiness and success.

There is nothing finer or greater in the universe than God, and a child of God is heir to all that is. “It is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs . . .” (Rom. 8:16, 17)

I am a child of God, and you are a child of God. It is a wonderful thought to realize that you are a child of God. You cannot meet a person who is not a child of God. In God’s sight you are equal to every other person, none is greater, none is less, and this is important to know. We are good enough for any blessing in this great universe that we make ourselves wise enough and ready enough to receive. Nothing is too good not to be received. Nothing will work only for the other person but not for us. When we have obtained this realization, we will have nothing to fear from people or situations.

Remember it is said that if God is for us, who shall be against us? With such a realization we have nothing to fear from ourselves either. We needn’t consider ourselves weak or lacking in will power, for we are children of God. We are strong enough to be master of our mind and of our body. Keep this in mind; you are a child of God in the divine flow of Spirit.

Keep in the divine flow, express the divine qualities, and let yourself be loving, kind, wise, courageous, free, understanding, and strong. You are a child of God; may you sustain this realization for all times.

Remember, God is Blessing You Right Now!

Healing Power

You have a healing power deep within your soul!

You are a child of God, a child of the Universe, an individualized expression of the Most High. In God you live and move and have your being; in the Universe you live and move and have your being. God dwells within you; the Universe dwells within you. The whole Universe walks with you; you do not walk the path of your life alone. The Universe is dynamically involved in you; its dynamic flow is always expressing as you. Thus you are always in touch with the flow of healing power.

Once you capture the idea that you are a whole creature, a child of the Universe, the very expression of the Universal stream of life, you will not be satisfied until you find improvement in health. As one example of this dynamic connection, Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder of the Unity movement, after a medical verdict that she only had a few months to live from terminal tuberculosis, got in touch with the flow of healing life and went on to live a full life for more than forty years.

It has been said that God is a circle whose center is everywhere. Know that God is a circle that is centered in you. All the attributes of the Infinite are in focus as you, flowing forth through you. You are in this flow right now. Indeed, you are this flow at the point where you are. Thus you are a child of the Universe, a Son or Daughter of God.

Meditate on this tremendous insight. It means that you are created in the image-likeness of an infinite idea. No matter what other influences may have left their mark on you from the outside, there is that of you that is begotten only of God, which is forever the divine flow from the inside.

You can be healed. You can be healed because you are whole! You have a healing power deep within your soul. Appearances may limit your judgment and your faith but the fundamental Truth remains: you are a child of the Universe, and spiritually you can never be cut off from the stream of life, what Solomon (Song of Sol. 4:15) and Jesus called “living water” and “a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:10, 14)

Early in the morning, take a few moments to “wait on the Lord,” to get yourself plugged in as it were. You can even do this while you are still in bed, before you get involved in the day’s activities. The current of life is within you as always, but you need to consciously get your thoughts on the right side. First, focusing in on your breath, affirm for yourself, “With every breath I breathe, I breathe the breath of God, and I am healed.”

Then you can also affirm something like this: “I am in the flow of life itself, and I move easily with the flow. I am free from tension, stress, and strain and I go forward in the flow, unhurried and unworried. I am radiantly and enthusiastically alive.” Finally, affirm, “I am a child of the Universe, established eternally in the healing stream of life. I am strengthened, renewed, restored, and made whole in every way.”

You can be healed! Remember that the healing stream is constant, not present only when you affirm that it is working. The need is not to overcome illness, but simply to open up the way whereby you get into the eternal flow of life. You have a healing power deep within your soul. You have a healing power ready to unfold, right where you are.

Remember, God is Blessing You Right Now!

Lent – Day 4

I AM

4th Day, Saturday. Read John 10:1-18.

I am a child of the Father, and my inheritance is from Him. I AM is the Christ within me, the true spiritual being, whom God made in His image and likeness. Through the I AM (the Christ), I link myself with the Father, with Spirit, with life, wisdom, love, peace, strength, power, and Truth.

I AM is the gate through which my thoughts come forth from the invisible, and it is through this gate that I go to get into the presence of Spirit.

The I AM has its being in heaven; its home is in the realm of God ideals. I hitch my I AM to the star of God, and infinite joy follows as night the day.

The I AM always assures me that the preponderance of power is in spiritual things. Fear throws dust in one’s eyes and hides the mighty spiritual forces that are always with one. I deny ignorance and fear, and affirm the presence and power of the I AM. “I AM THAT I AM . . . I AM hath sent me unto you.”

I realize that spiritual character is the rock foundation of being. As I build my consciousness in God-Mind, I find that I am in heaven right here on earth. I let go of the little self and take hold of the big self. “Not my will, but thine, be done.” The I AM is the will in its highest aspect. The will may be said to be the man, because it is the directive power that decides the character formation which makes what is called individuality.

I boldly affirm: “I am a child of God, and I am joint heir with Jesus to abiding life, wisdom, love, peace, substance, strength, and power.”

Questions:

1. Explain the I AM.

2. Where is the home of I AM?

3. What is the rock foundation of being?

4. What happens when we build our consciousness in God-Mind?

I am free to live healthily and happily. I am free to express my talents and abilities. I am free to go forward in peace and joy.

Remember, God is Blessing You, Right Now!

Lent – Day 2

AFFIRMATION

2d Day, Thursday. Read Luke 7:1-17.

The science of Spirit is the orderly study of truths formulated in Divine Mind according to the operation of universal law. An affirmation is a positive and orderly statement of Truth. By affirmation we claim and appropriate that which is ours.

The Word is the working power of Divine Mind. One will never go down to defeat if in his hour of need he positively affirms the almightiness of God-Mind through Christ, and invokes its help in his behalf.

I declare that as a child of God I am now entering the Christ consciousness of perfection. This is in itself an affirmation, the highest I can make. Jesus helped Himself into this high state of being by His use of the spoken word. He continually made the very highest affirmations such as, “I and the Father are one,” “All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.” I am joint heir with Jesus to the infinite good of the kingdom, and by the faithful use of my spoken word I claim my heavenly good.

Faith is the result of many affirmations. Each affirmation helps to build up a substantial, firm, unwavering state of mind, because it establishes Truth in consciousness.

As day by day I repeat and courageously live affirmations of Truth, I come to know that I am opening a channel of intelligent communication with the silent forces at the depths of being; thoughts and words therefrom flow forth, and I realize an entirely new source of power developing within me.

I affirm: “Through Jesus Christ I realize my divine sonship, and I am transformed into His image and likeness.”

Questions:

1. What is an affirmation?

2. What is the result of many affirmations?

3. What is the highest affirmation we can make?

4. What happens when one lives affirmations of Truth?

In time of need I will remind myself and declare: “I am God’s child, created in His image and likeness. I am joint heir with Jesus Christ to the kingdom of God.”

Remember, God is Blessing You, Right Now!
