Today, Monday, March 14, is the fifth day in the Lenten season. Lent is a period of time during which we can prepare ourselves for the Easter experience.
Assignment 5
The Garden of Eden represents that place in the life of the human soul where it knows deep within that it is One with God but nevertheless must go forth and experience. To know something it must be experienced. This is the law, for in no other way can the evolution of the human soul be made. Anything that is believed to be known by any other way than experience is hearsay and vicarious.
The Law of the soul is progress. Through these experiences it is easy to believe that we have in some way become separated from God. For the soul to grow it must make the choices and meet the assignments of life. The Garden of Eden is the region of the inner being but God wants man to know for himself – “You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free.” We must each know we are One with the Infinite Presence of the Only Power in the universe and work and move through life from this knowledge.
As human beings we are to eat of the “tree of life” in the midst of the Garden. This is the Truth of our Oneness with God. But of the “tree of knowledge of good and evil” which is what we see and perceive with our senses – we are not to eat. To eat means to appropriate. To accept as real and lasting the conditions in the world is to eat of this second tree. All that is happening to us is passing – like the growth and unfoldment of a child from infancy to full maturity and spirituality. We were created perfect and the perfect image remains with us.
“Only with thine eyes,” we are told, “shalt thou behold the wicked.” “Wicked” means “off balance” – man’s not-knowing. Man has looked at the outer conditions, “eaten” them with his heart and soul, forgotten God in back and through all experiences, and become lost in a world of his own making. To eat of the fruit of this tree is to believe that all that is happening to us is real, not knowing in all things God is the only power.
