How to Know if Fear Has Infiltrated Your Body

Have you ever felt suddenly anxious or “on edge” and didn’t know why?  There are many reasons why we might feel fearful at different times.  We get scared about things like physical danger, accidents, natural disasters, and so on.  These are all situations where fear can be helpful because it triggers the “fight or flight” response, which floods our bodies with adrenaline and prompts us to defend ourselves or flee the danger.

Unfortunately, there are also plenty of other situations where the fight or flight response is unnecessarily triggered and we end up feeling threatened and defensive even when there is nothing harmful about the present moment.

For example, we often fear job interviews, public speaking engagements, social gatherings, sports and other performance activities, doctor and hospital visits, and more.  These situations are not physically threatening yet our bodies often react to them as if they were.

Have you ever struggled with irrational fears like these?

Even though they may seem irrational, they actually have a simple cause:  your thoughts.  When you are faced with a situation that you feel unprepared to handle, your thoughts begin racing with horrible possibilities.

Your thoughts in this moment might sound something like this:  “I can’t give a speech in front of people, what if I mess up?  I’m no good at sports; I’ll only embarrass myself if I try to play.  I don’t want to go to the doctor; what if he finds something awful?”

As these thoughts race through your mind they trigger the fear response and your body begins reacting as if you were in actual physical danger.

Physical and Emotional Symptoms of Fear

When fear begins infiltrating your body, you will notice some unmistakable signs and symptoms.  These signs include tightening of your muscles, especially in the neck, shoulder and back area; you may also feel a tightening or queasiness in your abdomen; tightness or pressure in the chest, shortness of breath, pounding heart, restlessness, and muscle weakness or shakiness in the arms and legs.

Beyond the physical sensations you may also notice negative emotions like defensiveness, irritability, frustration, anger, aggression, sadness, and helplessness.  Continuously being faced with fearful situations can also lead to more serious physical and emotional problems such as insomnia, depression, appetite changes, weight loss or weight gain, and paranoia.

So, what can you do when you feel overwhelmed by fear?

Positive self-talk is one way to begin shifting your thoughts from fearful to calming.  Rather than worrying about negative things that could happen, you might soothe yourself by saying things like, “There’s nothing to be afraid of; it will all work out fine; I believe I can handle anything; all is well.”

Even better, intend to do everything you can to encourage a positive outcome for the fearful situation.  You could practice giving a speech repeatedly until you feel more comfortable, or visualize the doctor giving you a clean bill of health.

When you change the thoughts that are triggering your fear response, the fearful feelings subside.

Understanding God

A man sat by the window in the late afternoon seeking an understanding of God, the rays of the sun slanting through the blinds. He reflected upon a story about the apostle Paul in Athens, as told by the minister during church service that morning.

It seems that the city was full of idols, which provoked Paul no end. So he argued in the synagogue and in the market place and wherever people gathered.

Standing in the midst of a crowd in the central square, Paul then spoke out: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To an Unknown God’.”

Then he said to them, in effect, “I’m here to tell you about that unknown God.”

The man recalled again the words of Paul quoted by the minister, words which had stuck in his mind: “They should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us.”

Then the man thought to himself, “What about me? If all the works on theology had been destroyed or were no longer available to me, if I had no teacher to give me his or her personal opinion about religion, what would I do?”

What About You?

What would you do?

Do you not believe that you would gradually evolve some religious philosophy of your own? Do you not think that there would be some language of your heart that would be spoken to you to define God for you?

During your reflecting would you not come to know your own indwelling Spirit as the very Spirit of life?

Would this realization not bring you to the feeling of your oneness with this Spirit, your utter inability to live apart from it?

The Truth Would Dawn Upon You

In thinking of God in this way you would gradually come to see that your higher thoughts brought you into closer relationship with God. The truth would dawn upon you that your higher level of mind has some connection with God.

Your thoughts of peace, love, joy, beauty, and life would seem strangely akin to that which your heart would seek to present to you as the truth of God. Would you come to know God as Divine Mind?

Might you not also have the experience of feeling that deep within you there was some presence or power? Could this inner something, this presence and power of life, be also a presence of power and health?

You might discover that God was being revealed to you in countless ways in your day-by-day experiences. You might come to know the indwelling Spirit in your heart as something you could depend on to lead and direct you to whatever was needed at any particular time.

God is Altogether Something Good

Any former impression of God as living in the distance and in the future would give way to the teaching of your heart. Any old conception of God as an arbitrary judge would be replaced by a new and revealing knowledge that God is something altogether good.

A new life opens to the individual who gets this changed conception of God. He or she feels reborn and enters into a new world.

Approaching life by way of an understanding of God gives us the assurance that something of God’s Spirit goes before us to make our way smooth.

The right understanding of what God is and of your relation to God is the working principle you need in solving your problems, whatever they may be.

This working principle may heretofore have been unknown to you. In thinking and studying about God you have been given something like that which is given to the one who studies a science. You have been given a working principle: God.

Is God principle? God is that reliable, constant, and dependable something which you can work with, just as the student of science who knows its principles has a reliable, constant, and dependable something.

Learn to Feel After God

At first you may have difficulty in defining God. Let the language of your heart be sufficient at present.

Define God in your own terms. Learn to build up your own conception of God and your own philosophy of life, as long as these are confirmed by the prompting of your heart. Learn to feel after God, to seek God’s presence and your oneness with God.

Remember, God is Blessing You Right Now!

Why Fear Limits Your Life Potential

Have you ever felt like fear was preventing you from reaching your full potential in life?  If so, you are certainly not alone because fear is one of the biggest obstacles that many people face when trying to create better life circumstances.

Below are some of the most common ways that fear can hold you back:

Fear can prevent you from making positive changes.

Sometimes fear can make even the smallest changes seem extremely uncomfortable.  For example, you may be deeply dissatisfied with your job, but feel nervous or uncertain about finding and applying for a better one.  Or you may have always dreamed of buying your own home but worry that the responsibility would be too much to handle.

Fear can prevent you from breaking destructive habits.

We all know that smoking, poor dietary choices, excessive alcohol and a sedentary lifestyle are a recipe for health problems, but we often gravitate toward these habits because they help numb our anxious or fearful feelings.  If you have ever tried to break a bad habit like this, you know how stressful it can be because suddenly you are filled with anxiety and you don’t know how to handle it except to run back to your “pacifiers” – the very habits you are trying to break.

Fear can prevent you from taking risks.

Many of us shy away from risk because we fear negative consequences.  For example, you may hesitate to invest your money because you fear losing it, or avoid starting a new relationship because you were so hurt by the last one.  What most of us fail to realize is that risk can also bring great rewards.  Avoiding risk may help us avoid negative possibilities but we also miss the excitement and joy that come from positive outcomes.

Fear can prevent you from pursuing your goals.

Have you ever dreamed of doing something great but were never able to push yourself to do it?  Perhaps you dreamed of being a stand-up comedian but dreaded the thought of public speaking, or you desperately wanted to be a bestselling author but were too afraid to pen that novel lurking inside of you.

Fear can prevent you from expanding your life.

Social anxiety is another common way that fear can limit your potential.  It may prevent you from attending networking functions so your career or business can’t grow properly, or you may avoid taking that much needed vacation to relax and explore other cultures because you fear flying or being on a cruise ship.

How to Stop Fear from Limiting Your Potential

It’s important to note that all of these fears are most often groundless.  They are merely a perception that things “could” go wrong – but that doesn’t mean they will.

Rather than trying to force your way through the fear, you may find it easier to explore the many ways that fear can be effectively released from your mind, emotions, and body.  When you know how to release the fear, you simply handle it as you would any minor obstacle and then continue on your way to creating the best life you possibly can.

God Believes in You!

God believes in you! So the question is, “Do you believe in yourself?”

Do you know how important you are to God?  “How important could I be?” you may ask.

Jesus answers this question in three parables, found in Luke 15.

The first is the parable of the lost sheep. He said, “There was a shepherd who had a hundred sheep. And one of the sheep went astray from the ninety-nine. Would you not, as a shepherd, leave the ninety-nine and go after the one sheep that had gone astray?” And, of course, his listeners were astonished because who among them would leave the ninety-nine and go after that one? None of them would. They would say, “No, we have ninety-nine here. Let that one go.”

But no, God as a shepherd searches for that one sheep. In the same way, God as shepherd values each single person so much that he would risk going out into the dark, into the mountainous areas, at risk of robbery or worse, to find the one that is lost.

The next parable is about a lost coin. This time it’s a woman, God as a woman, a housewife who loses a silver coin from ten that she had. It says that she searched frantically for this one coin until she found it; and then she rejoiced.

In both instances, we find this sense of rejoicing after the finding. God searches, finds, restores, and rejoices.

With the sheep, the shepherd says, “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” And repentance simply means changing direction, moving toward God’s presence instead of away from God.

The woman says, “Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost. Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Joy is the outer expression of the inner experience of divine grace. When we feel and experience that movement of grace we naturally release that expression of joy. There is a celebration that takes place.

So we have the shepherd, God as a shepherd, who in the eyes of the Scribes and Pharisees would be an outcast, an insignificant person. Then we have the woman, God as a woman, and the woman in those days was of no significance at all, had no power. Jesus is saying that God comes in all these ways to search for you, to find you, to bring you back to himself.

The last parable of the three is the jewel. The imagination has been stirred up now; the people to whom Jesus is speaking are ready.

In the last parable Jesus said God is like a father. He said, “There was a man who had two sons.” The father, in this story, is one who would not have been admired in that culture because he gave way so easily and was undignified.

We know the story as the parable of the Prodigal Son.

Remember, in the story, the youngest son went off. He wanted to take his share of the inheritance he would be due from his father. In those times, the eldest son received two thirds of the inheritance when his father died. The younger brother would only receive a third, so he thought he would get a head start and have his entire share of the inheritance early so he could go off and a get a head start over his brother. He wouldn’t be able to stay at home anyway, because all of the farm and everything would go to his brother.

So he went to his father and asked for his share and, the story says, went off into a far country and spent his money. A famine came along and when his money was gone he found he had no friends left either; and he ended up feeding and sleeping with the hogs.

It was then, it says in the story that he came to himself. He realized who he was, and he began the journey back to the father’s house. When he first went back he told his father that he wasn’t worthy to be a son any more and to just hire him as one of the servants. That was his solution.

But the father’s solution was different. He told his servants, “Look, come and bring the best robe to put on my son and bring a ring to put on his finger and shoes to put on his feet. He’s no barefoot slave.” These were important symbols: the robe of acceptance, the ring of authority, and the shoes of understanding. Then he said, “Let’s have a party. Let’s kill the fatted calf. Let’s celebrate.” That which was lost is found again, that which was lost has come back into a sense of oneness with the indwelling presence. It is cause for celebration.

So often we feel a sense of insignificance in our world today, do we not? In this world of complexity we sometimes feel our littleness. In fact, someone said to me just a couple of days ago, “Does it really matter if I’m not there? Does it make any difference if I stay away?” Yes, it makes a difference. Yes, it matters. You are important to God, and you are important to everyone else. What you do and where you are matters.

Remember in the story, there was something else that happened. When the son came home and the father threw a party, there was another person on the scene – the elder brother.

The elder brother was not too happy about the situation. He had stayed at home. Of course, they were his fields, he was working his fields and he was the one who would benefit from them. But he was self-righteous, he was angry. In fact, he was in a far country too, wasn’t he? He may not have left the house of his father in proximity, but he left it in consciousness. He was angry and self-righteous that someone he thought undeserving should be receiving good; and yet he wasn’t recognizing his own good.

We might ask ourselves at this point if we ever feel resentment or jealousy when we see someone else receiving some extraordinary good. Are we able to celebrate with them?

One of our children in Sunday school had a funny thing to say about the prodigal son story. The Sunday school teacher was telling them the story and at the end she said to them, “Was anyone sorry when the prodigal son came home?” She was just getting to the part about the elder son, and one little boy raised his hand. He said, “The fatted calf.” Yes, the fatted calf was sorry but the elder son was sorry too.

The story goes that the father wanted him to come to the party. He entreated him, he begged him to come to the party. He said, “Son, I’ve always been with you and all that I have is yours. This is your brother who was lost and is found, was dead and is alive again. Come and celebrate with us.”

There’s a story that I enjoy about a family that moved to California and they took a house that had a wonderful view looking right out at the ocean. But the house was on a cliff top and it had a wall just at the bottom of the garden in front of the cliff which then dropped off quite a way. They had a four-year-old daughter and they were really concerned that she would climb on this wall and fall off down the cliff someday.

One day the mother looked through the kitchen window and, sure enough, the little girl is going across the garden. She climbed on the wall. She stands on top of the wall, and then she falls. The mother rushed out, her heart pounding, and she looked over the edge. There was her daughter hanging on a bush that was about three feet below the top of the wall.

She didn’t know whether to scold her daughter or just hug her. Of course, she gathered her up in her arms and she said, “What happened? Tell me what happened.” The little girl said, “Well, I got on the wall and then I was falling and when I was falling I said, ‘God, get under me!’ and God said ‘I’ve always been under you’.”

You know, that’s the truth. Out of the words of little children sometimes come the greatest truths, God has always been under us. As it says in the scriptures, “Underneath are the everlasting arms.” God has always been with us, at all times, even when we’ve felt our deepest sense of separation. God has always been with us.

Our greatest joy comes through discovering this for ourselves. We can never really wander away from the Father. Any feeling of being lost and alone is healed when we accept the truth that we can never wander from God. God is always one with us. We need to recognize this, to recognize God’s omnipresence, to feel it, to trust it, to rely upon it, to live our life in accordance with that realization.

This is the greatest goal we can ever set for ourselves, to become fully conscious of the presence of God at every moment of our lives. When we know that, then we know we are important to God, and then we know our own worth. You’ve got to believe in you, because God believes in you. That’s where it all starts.

Remember, God is Blessing You Right Now!

Imaging and the Law of Attraction

Imaging is the process by which the Law of Attraction is set into motion. Everyone images, but many persons don’t understand the power of their mental processes to create harmony in their lives.

Consciously imaging a condition as it is desired, and then working steadily with this conscious image, we can bring any desired condition into manifestation.

But, of course, imaging alone will not bring the desired results. This is the first essential, but added to it there must be action. The image or the picture will give us the enthusiasm to perform the act, and this act will combine with the mental picture to then create the faith to look beyond the sense world into the world of Spirit, the source of every good and lasting desire.

Nothing stands between one and his highest ideal except his lack of understanding of this power and his refusal to work with it.

But a person cannot desire a good thing and then spend his time worrying or fearing that he will not get it. Having sent out the desire, one must have faith that it will not return evil. The Law of Attraction cannot bring both good and evil at the same time; it must bring one or the other.

Our own mental condition, the scope of our vision, our action and faith, determine exactly how much substance of any kind will be drawn to us. The law will give us just what in our innermost thought is projected, provided we put into action the forces that will bring it into reality.

If you have not already begun to use this Law of Attraction consciously, then I suggest you give some serious thought to starting to today. Take a few moments, each day, to quietly picture the things and conditions that you desire to see manifest in your outer life. It isn’t necessary to picture the specific steps that lead to accomplishment. See in your mind the accomplished end, the result. Do this in a loving and happy air of expectancy.

Your attitude of loving expectancy is a wonderfully attractive power, and the more love and emotion you put into your mental picture, the sooner it will materialize. Never worry or become impatient if this picture is not pained on the canvas of the visible world just as soon as you think it should be. The divine law does not consider time. It brings into visibility the things and conditions into life as we become fitted to receive them.

If you would have a life of fullness and harmony you must know and work with the law, and the desires of our heart and mind shall become reality. Keep in mind that our world without is a reflection of our world within – always! In other words, that which is in our material world is simply the outward reflection of what our thoughts have been.

It is a shocking and sobering realization, but we must admit it. The mental image is what counts, be it for good or otherwise. It is a devastating or a beneficent force just as we choose to make it. We can make the coming day just what we want it to be, and we will be tomorrow what we think today.

Remember that the Law of Attraction is always at work. Man is not involved in caprice or luck or chance or circumstance; man is basically his own fate. We can think ourselves into health or sickness, prosperity or poverty, success or failure, so what shall it be? The choice is yours.

Remember, God is Blessing You Right Now!

Learning to Let Go

Letting go is one of the most powerful self-development skills you’ll ever learn.

It’ll grant you the super-human ability to let go of troublesome emotions at will, enabling you to control your fear, anger, pride and ego – all in one fell swoop.

Now, we all experience emotions every single day.

Emotions are what make us human. And more often than not, they help us. Evolution has selected our basic range of emotions to be the best for our survival.

We experience grief after death. We experience fear when confronted with danger. We experience anger when we’re rubbed up the wrong way. These are essential to living.

But sometimes emotions run riot.

They go wild, and lead us into doing things we don’t really want to do.

Emotions cause us to fear public speaking, our words drying up and our bodies freezing in terror the moment we stand on that platform. Emotions cause us to continue ignoring once good friends, because we’re still angry at what happened, and can’t reach forgiveness. Emotions keep us yearning for our addictions to things such as bad relationships or gambling.

So, emotions aren’t always good for us. Logically, they don’t make sense.

But here’s something to remember:
You are not your emotions!

This is a core mistake almost everyone makes. You experience your emotions, yes. But you are not your emotions. They’re just “feelings” passing through. They’re not you.

Right? Think about it. You are not your emotions.

And that’s not all.

Because emotions are not you, you can actually “let go” of unwanted emotions – on demand. You can switch off fear and anger, as easily as you’d switch off a light.

Almost every type of therapy out there has the ultimate goal of helping you to let go of your unwanted emotions.

From psychotherapy to tribal screaming therapy, the ultimate goal is the same. To help you let go of the emotions you don’t want. To release, to let go of your attachments. To move on.

But these types of therapy can be a little long-winded. Letting go of emotions directly is really the quickest, easiest and most straight-forward personal growth technique.

So, how can you let go of your unwanted emotions?

Well, it can really be as simple as asking yourself the question: “Can I let this go?”

Remember, you are not your emotions. Right now, you’re tightly holding onto your emotions without even realizing it. You have a tight clench around anger with that annoying person. You have what Buddhists would call an attachment to fear when it comes to public speaking.

You are actually the one holding on to the emotion. You’re in control, and you don’t even realize it.

So, make a decision to let go of it. To loosen the clench. To release.

Imagine holding onto a small ball, with a really firm grip. So firm in fact, that it’s actually hurting you to hold it. But you keep on squeezing it tight. You almost don’t realize that you can let go.

That’s how most of us treat emotions. We don’t realize that we can simply let go of the grip… and let the ball fall away.

That’s what letting go, or “releasing,” is all about.

So, bring to the front of your mind any situation which may have an emotional charge for you right now. A particular person, a frustrating situation, a “mini” addiction. Whatever that may be, and wherever you are at the moment. No need to relax, particularly.

Then, remembering what we’ve said about emotions, ask yourself: “Can I let this go?”
Answer “Yes” or “No” out loud. It doesn’t matter which you answer, just say the first and most natural thing that comes to mind. Both responses are good.

Then, if you can, feel yourself unclench the emotion. Allow the tension to be released, and the emotion to roll away if needed. You may wish to breathe out while doing this, or imagine a door in your abdomen opening up. Really feel it release.

The process should feel something like when the doctor calls to let you know those worrying tests have come back all clear: a release of tension and anxiety.

If you find yourself resisting, ask yourself: “Can I let this go – just for this moment? Just for now? Just for fun? And just because it’s a smart thing to do?”

Again, feel yourself unclenching. Then check how you’re feeling. Emotions are like onions: they’re layered, and removing one sometimes unveils another. If there’s still some charge there, repeat the questioning until you’re clear of resistance, or feel like stopping.

This, quite simply, is the basic releasing process.
If you find resistance coming up when you’re asking “Can I let this go?” … whether that resistance is anger, fear, lust, greed, passion … then ask yourself: “Can I hold onto this for a little longer?”

If the answer is yes, ask yourself a few more times: “And a little longer still?”

Then either give yourself permission to hold onto it for a little longer. Or, if you decide you’ve held onto that “bad” emotion for long enough – then just let it go.

Try it out for yourself. Ask “Can I let this go?” with all of your issues and negative emotions.

And you may as well do it now.

You can let go of emotions at any time – even while mid-conversation in a busy restaurant. No special meditation positions or relaxation CDs required.

(This great article on Learning to Let Go is written by Karl Moore, of http://www.karlblog.com)

Also, it’s worth noting that this is only a very brief introduction to letting go. As this is such an important topic, I’ve covered it much more comprehensively – alongside a number of other releasing techniques – inside my book, “The Secret Art of Self-Development.” (ISBN 0955993504.)

Master this powerful skill for yourself – and you’ll suddenly begin enjoying much more happiness, freedom and emotional control in your life.

Letting go is a true self-development miracle, the real secret behind almost every therapy out there.

And now you hold the key to unlocking its magic.

The Prayer that Never Fails

Prayer is, I believe, essential in every life. It is not merely essential to what has been called the salvation of the soul, because the soul is never lost, but it is essential to the well-being of each person.

Each of us needs to find within ourselves a sense of oneness with God, a sense of self-realization and inner security, and so achieve the “peace that passes all understanding.” As St. Augustine said, “Our hearts are ever restless, till they find repose in Thee.”

The key is in a deeper, spiritual insight into prayer. Emerson said, “Prayer is a study of truth, a sally of the soul into the unbound infinite.”

The Starting Point of Prayer

God is not a person to whom we pray, but a process by which we live. God is present as a Presence right where we are. God is inherent in everything we seek, and is in the inner urge by which we seek it.

Relax and let go, and rest in the realization that you are the living and loving Presence of God expressing as you.

I have found it helpful to use the words “Be still and know that I am God” as I slowly and silently repeat the words to myself in a meditative process. I gently drop off one word each time, like this: “Be still and know that I am,” “Be still and know that I,” etc., finishing up with “Be still” and then simply “Be.” This point of oneness is the starting point of prayer. There is no one to reach for, no outer source to receive help from. You pray, then, not to God, but from a consciousness of God.

In this process there must be but one thing kept in mind; the thought of the individual and God drawing nearer and nearer together. This must be clear-cut in the thought. Any belief in separation, any thought of doubt, must be kept out of mind.

Whatever or whoever you are praying for; remember this is the first step. Lay aside your concern and dwell in the consciousness of Oneness. Then you are ready to pray.

Easy Prayer

Frank B. Whitney, the founder, developer, and first editor of the Unity magazine Daily Word, suggests this consciousness of oneness and simple knowingness in his poem Easy Prayer:

Does the child that’s calling “Father”
Need to think what to say?
Does the flower in need of sunning
Have to wonder where to turn?
Does the child at Mother’s breast
Need to query, “Is she near?”
Is the child just simply praying
In its own instinctive way?

Simple is such way of prayer:
Knowing that we need not question,
Sensing God as ever near,
Feeling that He cares and loves us.
Easy is this thing called prayer:
Thinking God is close at hand,
Simply loving, simply trusting.
God made prayer an easy thing.

The Prayer that Never Fails

It is important that we study, read Truth ideas, and seek to condition our consciousness. But finally we must, as Revelation says, “make an end to prayer,” and accept.

In Genesis we read: “And God said, ‘Let there be light;’ and there was light.” It doesn’t say “There must be . . .,” or “There shall be . . .,” or “Please, God, make there be . . .” It simply says, “Let there be . . .” “‘Let there be light;’ and there was light.” This may be the easiest and most effective of prayers.

For instance, if there is a health need, what better way is there to do this than to say, “Let there be health.” Just relax and, in receptivity to the everywhere present life of Spirit, let health take possession. This is spiritual healing in its simplest and purest form.”

Perhaps finances are a source of anxiety? Then let go! Fill your mind with the spiritual concept of prosperity. Declare with confidence: “Let there be limitless supply.” Don’t even think that you wish there would be, or you think there ought to be, but just “Let there be . . .”

Get into your consciousness that what you desire, God desires for you. It is part of the Infinite creative intention for you. Say “Let there be . . .”

This is the prayer that never fails.

Remember, God is Blessing You Right Now!

How to be Free from Fear

Would you like to be free from fear of all kinds – to dissolve these fearful imaginings and have a sense of inner peace? Of course you would. I’m sure that from time to time we all have felt the pangs of fear. Some of us have wrestled through tedious hours and days and weeks, sometimes even years, with some dread fear.

We might instantly have freed ourselves from this fear if we had understood the total unreality of fear, and the absolute power and presence of God that is everywhere, evenly present throughout the Universe.

Our fear seems very real to us, but we must let go of the destructive thought of fear. And the only way to dissolve it or get rid of it or let it go is to replace it with faith in the Infinite presence and process of God.

We can and must overcome this fear because it is within our power to do it. No one else can do it for us; it all depends on the kind of thoughts we entertain. Do we give a thing the power to hurt because of the fear thought we hold about it, or do we give it the power of good by holding faith thoughts? We cannot hold both fear and faith thoughts at the same time. Our mind is our own, and it is up to us to decide the kind of thoughts we want to hold. It takes less energy on our part to hold the right kind of thoughts, thoughts that build us, than it does to hold fear thoughts that tear down.

What is fear? Fear is faith in some negative condition or thing. But fear is not of God. God did not make anything for us to fear. Fear has no reality; it has no power of itself. The only power that fear has is the power you give it, like conjuring up fanciful, imaginary beliefs about it. There can be nothing to fear unless we ourselves give something the power to harm.

In order to overcome fear we must increase our faith in God. When we are fearful we are having faith in the negative or the “evil” side of life. Our faith must be built on a firm foundation of good, with God as the only presence and power in the whole Universe. Faith moves mountains of doubt and fear.

Faith must be put into action in every thought, word, and deed. It is this active faith that is the remedy for all fear. Celia Walters says in one of her books:  “The remedy for fear is action. Are you afraid to do the thing that you know ought to be done? Then go ahead and do it. Your fear will vanish like a shadow in the doing.”

When you feel the fear rising up within you, flow with it, experience all the sensations it brings, even welcome it as a friend that you know very well; demand more, tell it to do its worst, then go ahead anyway and do the thing that is yours to do. The fear then has nothing to hold on to, and will vanish into the nothingness that it is. This is putting faith into action. So how do we put our faith into action? Simply by doing the thing that we think we are afraid to do.

Why did Jesus stress the importance of faith? He knew that faith in God is an unbreakable connection. Always, Jesus looked beyond appearances to the truth of God’s good. Let us have an unwavering faith in God. Our faith keeps our vision high in the face of every challenge or change and enables us to greet each day with joy and courage. Let us pray today as Jesus did, with a thankful heart, a steady faith, and a sure knowledge of our oneness with God.

And remember these words of Paul, in his second letter to Timothy, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Tim 1:6,7) This statement tells us plainly that God didn’t instill fear within us. Fear is of our own making. We want to remember this often, to remind ourselves that we have the power within us to wipe our fear away, to dissolve all vestiges of fear consciousness, and to express the power of love and wisdom and intelligence and faith in all of our affairs.
