It Was a Dark and Stormy Night

One afternoon a few years ago, when we lived on Coffee Pot Bayou, there was a sudden storm, short but fairly severe. We looked out of the window and saw there was a little blue sailboat, just a very tiny one, out on the bayou. There was a man and a little child in the sailboat. It looked like the sailboat was in trouble and the man couldn’t get it where he wanted it to go.

I went down to the dock, and by that time he’d . . . Read More

Pay Attention to the Obvious

Maggie Finefrock, a dear friend who was on my staff as the Director of Youth Education when I was the Director of Ministry Services at the Association of Unity Churches, was always such a fount of wisdom and had the innate ability to touch people’s hearts through little sayings. One saying she used often in talking to new ministerial students or newly ordained ministers just going out into the field was simply this: “Your ministry is at the end of your nose. So pay attention to that.”

The same thing is true of the guidance we seek in our own lives. Our guidance is . . . Read More

How to Talk to God

When Jesus talked to God, he aligned himself with God. He said, “The Father and I are one,” and “He who has seen me has seen the Father.” To differentiate in a simple way between prayer and meditation, we often say that prayer is talking to God, and meditation is listening to God. But for Jesus, prayer was talking to God in a special way. He prayed and spoke not just to God, but . . . Read More

God’s Eternal Willingness

Prayer is not just a one-time thing, it’s living in a consciousness of God’s presence, present with us at all times. Prayer is drawing us to that awareness; it opens us up to it. The words we use are simply tools to open us up to the flow which is God’s eternal willingness within to bring that eternal good, the riches of God’s presence, into our lives.

This is the abundance and joy that Jesus talks about. . . . Read More

How to Re-Activate Your Faith

ARE YOU READY?

Are you ready to move to a new level of awareness? Are you ready to move to a new level of consciousness?

Recently, a person in church said to me, “You know, I’ve been attending now for six years. I’ve sat out in the congregation and I’ve listened to the messages and I’ve heard the lessons and I’ve participated in many different activities, but I’ve never applied the spiritual principles to myself, to my life.” . . . A Firm Foundation

Charles Fillmore, the co-founder of Unity, said, “Man is not the limited creation that he thinks he is, but he is the focus of an infinite idea.” A powerful statement indeed.

We are talking about faith. We may often talk about having faith, but Jesus said, “Have faith in God.” There is a difference you know.

You’ve had faith many times in your life. In fact, you’ve had . . . Read More

Power-filled Keys to Personal Prosperity

I feel quite sure that most of us are interested in prosperity. If someone should ask you “Are you ready to better your financial life?” you would probably hasten to say that you are. Most of us think we’re ready for prosperity. But I wonder if we are, really.

Now, it’s hard to imagine not being ready and willing to welcome with open arms the good things we desire from life. Who wouldn’t be happy to have a new car, or the kind of house we’ve always wanted, or a substantial increase in salary, or a promotion on the job?

But, says Unity minister and author Eric Butterworth, “simply wanting the benefits doesn’t mean that we are really ready for them. If we were, they would come to us. Make no mistake about it. The amount of prosperity that you have at any given moment is the exact amount you are prepared to accept.” . . . Read More

The Secret of Unlimited Prosperity

The basic secret of unlimited prosperity, says author Catherine Ponder, in a little book of the same name, is this: “God is the source of your supply, and has provided many channels through which the riches of the universe can flow to you.”

Rev. Ponder says that your supply can come to you from all points of the universe.

And there is yet another aspect of the secret of unlimited supply to consider: “You must share your supply if you would insure continuation of your supply. In practical ways, you will find that sharing and expectancy are the beginning of financial increase.”

Catherine Ponder goes on to say, “One of the most scientific, businesslike, and spiritual ways of sharing is through the act of tithing one-tenth of one’s gross income to God’s work. Systematic giving opens the way to systematic receiving.”

Charles Fillmore, in his book Prosperity, has explained why the act of tithing releases unlimited supply: “When a person tithes he is giving continuously, so that no spirit of grasping, no fear, and no thought of limitation gets a hold upon him. There is nothing that keeps a person’s mind so fearless and so free to receive the good constantly coming to him as the practice of tithing. . . . Tithing is based upon a law that cannot fail, and it is the surest way ever found to demonstrate plenty, for it is God’s own law and way of giving.”

Tithing was a real eye-opener for me. I had never really tithed before I went into ministerial school. I’d heard of it, of course, but I think I just thought of it as being for other people.

When I was in ministerial school I was also working in the publicity office for Unity School, writing news releases to the local newspapers and being responsible for the weekly newsletter for Unity School, Unity Village News. However, some nine months or so after working there, it was decided that the publicity department would be revamped and reduced in size, which meant as the last person hired I was the first to go.

Somewhat shaken by this turn of events and wondering what I could do about it, I decided to seek the counsel of one of the ministers who was a teacher at the school. After some conversation around the situation, he asked me if I was in the habit of tithing. I looked at him in astonishment, and made a comment something to the effect that I couldn’t afford to tithe.

He responded, “You cannot afford not to tithe. In your financial circumstances, you have no choice but to trust God completely. Who wants you to be prosperous more than your loving Father? Who is better equipped to help you than God is?” I muttered something about only having eleven dollars in my pocket and he suggested that I tithe from that right now and then tithe on a continuing basis from any money I received in the future. Amazed that it was possible to start tithing with such a small amount, I tithed $1.10 to Silent Unity that very day.

I have to tell you that I have continued to tithe ever since that day, because what happened to me seemed like a miracle. Someone from the education department said they’d heard that maybe I was free to do some work for them, and asked if I would consider compiling all the Christmas poems from the library for them. They would give me a love offering for doing it. I loved doing that. It was wonderful. After I completed that task, I was asked to put together a special brochure for the continuing education extension program. Again I got a love offering, and again I tithed. And so it continued all the way through school.

Tithing put my feet on firm ground.

I do believe it’s the secret of unlimited prosperity.

Yours, with blessings of abundant prosperity for you,

Fifteen Turning Points in Truth

I’d like to share with you fifteen turning points in Truth that were written by that great Truth teacher, minister, and author, Dr. Emmet Fox. But before sharing them with you, I’d like to tell you one of the great stories about him and his special connection with the Unity movement.

In the early years of Unity after the Fillmores had started training and ordaining ministers, Emmet Fox wanted to become a Unity minister. But at that time, one of the requirements for acceptance was that a person must have completed a correspondence course in “Lessons in Truth,” which was available at that time.

Emmet Fox, already a well-known and respected figure in the New Thought movement, felt it was unnecessary for him to . . . Read More
